I can’t help but want one of Pepper Computer’s Pepper Pad 2 hand-held computer thingies. It’s available for pre-order now at only $800. But what is it, you ask?
According to Pepper, it’s “either as a user’s only wireless computing device or [...] a convenient, easy-to-use accessory to a PC.”
It’s a Linux-based palmtop computer with 20GB hard drive, 800 x 600 12.1″ display, 802.11b+g, and a bunch of other stuff.
The Pepper Pad 2 offers all the functionality you need to play, edit, create and organize your digital media. The Pepper Pad 2 weighs 2 pounds and has an 8.4-inch color touchscreen so you can easily view an entire Web page. It also features built-in stereo speakers, microphone, headphone jack and external mike, plus a D-pad for navigation. For easy text entry day or night you can use the lighted thumb QWERTY keypad.
As though we couldn’t come up with any of our own reasons/use to want such a device, Pepper listed a few to get us started:
- Search or shop using the built in Mozilla Web browser. This browser can handle any fancy Web sites including those using Flash.
- Add photos from your memory card or from a folder on your PC with one click.
- Store hours of music and video plus thousands of photos.
- Play 2D/3D and Flash games.
- Listen to music and streaming radio.
- Share anything including mixtapes you design and create using MP3s downloaded from the Internet.
- Research your next vacation on Web and keep your clippings organized for offline viewing.
- Chat via Pepper’s AOL compatible IM client.
- E-mail customized greeting cards.
- Edit photos and create photo albums and scrapbooks to share with one click.
- Watch your MPEG2 and MPEG 4 videos.
- Easily download new Pepper Packages to your Pepper.
- Enjoy your Pepper’s easy to use and maintain software.
I’m curious about how open it is. Will I be able to install my own software, perhaps a Java app or two?
